CHAPTER 4

Hunted

Odette glanced around her sparse living quarters for any of her belongings she might have missed. Satisfied that she’d packed everything, she exited her room at the safehouse in Cassis for the last time.

It had been two weeks since her arrival on the shoreline. A lot had happened in those two weeks since she’d met Peter between the two of them, as well as their work for the cause. To her chagrin, it became apparent that the contacts Girard had would be of little help to the cause, rendering moot any further communication.

Peter, however, had not been put off by the inconvenience in the slightest. Instead, in the resilient manner Odette had become accustomed to, he’d suggested she run an errand for him instead. He explained that there were a good many agents who had begun working for him when their assignments had dissolved in a similar manner.

Odette, happy to remain close to Peter and wanting to be useful, had readily agreed. The man was becoming more intriguing to her with each passing day. His positive approach to every circumstance was a welcome change in the depressing atmosphere of war, and Odette was only too happy to let it envelope her.

Peter had expediently scrapped her original traveling assignment to Essex so that she now worked for him. No sooner had this been settled than the Germans descended upon an unoccupied section of Southern France. The latest news was that this invasion was in response to the Allied attack of North-West Africa.

Utter chaos reigned as the Gestapo remained in hot pursuit of SPINDLE’s agents, having caught on to the circuit’s activity.

For all their safety, Peter had proposed they depart to London by way of a covert landing field. The timing would have to be perfect to avoid detection by the Germans, but Odette had faith that they’d manage it. Anything felt possible with Peter in charge.

As was the case with most operations, this secret departure was set to take place beneath the inky cloak of night. It was dark by the time she reached the secluded landing field, which lay close to Périgueux in the Dordogne.

Peter waved to her from his place just outside the aircraft.

Despite the danger they worked under, Odette’s heart skipped a beat at the sight of him.

When she was close enough, Peter pulled her in, kissing her cheek. “Are you ready?”

“If you are.”

Peter scanned the dark landscape before nodding toward the plane. “Hop in, then.”

Odette pulled herself up into the cabin of the plane, a shiver of anticipation dancing up her spine as she observed the control panel in the cockpit. Soon she and Peter would be high up in the clouds, flying far from the bloodhound Nazis scouring the land below.

It was strange how things had come about–how quickly she and Peter had become attracted to one another. She believed that their shared passion for the cause was the glue to their budding romance. She felt pangs of guilt when she thought of Roy, but it had been so long since they had been together.
